School Presentations
Training, caring for and racing sled dogs started as a passion and has become a way of life for my family and I
My name is Tom Thurston and my story started in the back country of Routt County Colorado where I was just wanting to go winter camping and do some non- motorized traveling with a few of my best friends. This has turned into tens of thousands of miles of training and racing over a decade which includes race victories, veterinary awards, sportsmanship awards and not to mention 4 trips up the Iditarod trail.
Another passion of mine is sharing these wonderful yet life changing experiences with audiences of all ages but especially children. Being able to share tales of the trail and at the same time teach them about setting goals, staying focused, accountability and perseverance is not only rewarding but fun and humorous. The questions they ask are honest and without bias which happens to be one of my favorite parts of the presentation. We have lots of opportunities for questions and answers.
Depending on the age group the presentation may involve a slide show, more hands on interactive items or just a good old fashion story about the trail. Regardless we always end with a show and tell when we bring in equipment used for the dogs and the musher. We certainly cannot forget the grand finale when the children get to meet the real superstar, Darla, a 5 time Iditarod finisher who has saved my life on multiple occasions. She is retired but has quite the resume and a kind and gentle spirit.
We are now trying to secure a few more presentations before the school year is out. The money we charge is to help educate and preserve the passion for running sled dogs. Our fee is $500 for up to 2 hours of presentation time. This fee can be reduced when several schools in the same area book on the same day. We also do a traveling road show when the snow cooperates. This includes a short loop around a field at the school and we take students and teachers for rides. The cost for this varies and is based on individual needs and proximity.

Happy Trails,
Tom Thurston
